<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a guard method at the time of setting of hydraulic pressure characteristic values, enabling guarding from failure and mechanical breakdown of an automatic transmission, and a control device for this. <P>SOLUTION: When a fluctuation range of turbine rotational speed reaches predetermined rotational speed, engagement of a friction engagement element based on control of hydraulic pressure by a control part is released (Nt guard).
