A method for preparing a substituted or unsubstituted 9,10-diaryl anthracene, and an electroluminescent device containing the 9,10-diaryl anthracene as a host material are provided to improve color purity, efficiency and stability and to obtain a wide energy gap. A method for preparing a substituted or unsubstituted 9,10-diaryl anthracene comprises the steps of reacting a substituted or unsubstituted anthracene with a halogenating agent to prepare a halogenated anthracene; reacting the halogenated anthracene with aryl boric acid or borate to prepare a substituted or unsubstituted 9,10-diaryl anthracene; drying the substituted or unsubstituted 9,10-diaryl anthracene under reduced pressure to concentrate it; and carrying out flash chromatography with hexane and dichloromethane in turn and subliming the obtained one at 320 deg.C.
