Ferulate esterase producing bacterial strain Lactobacillus brevis LB1154 or functional mutants thereof and methods of using ferulate esterase producing bacterial strain Lactobacillus brevis LB1154 as forage additive is disclosed. Compositions comprising Lactobacillus brevis LB1154 alone or in combination with other strains for use as a silage inoculant, and methods for treating pre- ensiled plant material with Lactobacillus brevis LB1154 to enhance digestability of the silage are disclosed.
