One or more processes for the adsorptive separation of para-xylene using benzene as a desorbent. The high strength of the benzene is lowered by dilution with an aliphatic hydrocarbon, by proper operating temperature, by adjusting adsorbent moisture content (LOI), by selecting proper adsorbent cation balance, or a combination thereof. The adsorbent may be a X-FAU zeolite or a Y-FAU zeolite with Ba and K.
