PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cathode material that has a high packing density, high rate performance, and improved discharge capacity and shows high stability in a long-term cycling at a high charge voltage for high-performance secondary battery applications.SOLUTION: A metal oxide powder is provided, which is a lithium metal oxide powder to be used as a cathode material in a rechargeable battery and consists of a core material and a surface layer. The core has a layered crystal structure comprising elements of Li, metal M and oxygen, in which the content of Li is stoichiometrically controlled, the metal M is represented by formula M=CoM', where a satisfies 0≤a≤0.05 and M' is at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Al, Ga and B. The surface layer consists of a mixture of the elements of the core material and inorganic N-based oxides, where N is at least one metal selected from the consisting of Mg, Ti, Fe, Cu, Ca, Ba, Y, Sn, Sb, Na, Zn, Zr and Si.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 8 |
