A method of making cellular material having a plurality of sealed cells comprises producing two plastics sheets coated with a plastics material that is substantially impervious to gas at an elevated temperature, embossing one sheet and coating to produce a plurality of closely spaced discrete cells, and sealing said two sheets together to permanently seal said shells. The cellular material may be made from at least one three-ply laminate made by applying a coating of a plastics-containing liquid to each of two surfaces and then sealing the twoply laminates one to another via their coated surfaces. Specified base materials are polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, nylon, cellulose acetate and polystyrene. Specified coating materials are polyvinylidene chloride, polyfluorocarbons and a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile. Adhesive may be applied to the base material prior to coating. An apparatus for effecting the process of the invention comprises means 130-135 for preheating a first sheet, an embossing cylinder 139, means 137 and 138 for passing said sheet around said cylinder, means 146 to 149 for preheating a second plastics sheet, a resiliently surfaced roller 151 in pressure engagement with said cylinder, means for feeding said second sheet about said resiliently surfaced roller and means for pressure contacting said first and said second sheets. |
