A device for gapping interlocked lengths of sliding clasp fastener stringer forming material, each consisting of a tape to which is sewn a coil made from a single filament, each coil turn constituting a fastener element, comprises a lower die block 12 which is bifurcated to provide a slot therethrough, an upper, vertically displaceable block 16, which is bifurcated to provide a slot therethrough which is aligned with the slot of the lower block, said blocks cooperating to hold the interlocked lengths of said material in place while the lower block guides a pair of interlocked lengths of said material, a vertically displaceable plate 20 positioned above the upper block and normally held in spaced parallel relationship with this upper block by helical springs 24, 24a, a rod 26 rigidly secured to the plate, the plate being displaceable vertically by appropriate means against the bias of the springs by force applied to the rod, thereby displacing in an up and down direction the upper bifurcated block, a punch 14 rigidly secured to said plate, said punch being always disposed in the slot of the upper block, but movable relative to the slot into the slot in the lower block, said punch formed with an arcuate end, the thickness of the punch being such that the space between each of its side faces and the faces of the slot of the bifurcated lower block is narrower than the thickness of the filament from which the coils are made, the faces of the lower block terminating as sharp cutting edge portions, and like the punch, made of hard steel or any abrasion-resistant material. The movement of the plate downwardly first causes the block 16 to move downwardly to clamp the interlocked lengths of material and subsequently causes the punch 14 to move relative to the block 16 to cut the coil sections. The punch instead of having flat sides can have sides formed with notches which dig into the cut turns and pull them downwardly. |
