A breaker-reinforced pneumatic tyre has one sidewall (preferably the outboard wall) more supple than the other to reduce lateral flexibility. Described methods of achieving this effect are (Figs. 1-7, not shown, respectively) (a) inserting more carcass reinforcement plies in the less supple wall; (b) using a harder and/or thicker layer of rubber in the less supple wall; (c) forming the carcass in the less supple sidewall of cross-laid cord plies and in the other sidewall of radial cord plies; (d) providing fillers of which the one in the less supple sidewall extends further up the wall and is optionally harder than the other filler; (e) reinforcing the less supple sidewall with a flipper extended into its radially inner region, the other bead having a conventional or no flipper; (f) forming the beads with different minimum diameters, and hence sidewalls of different radial heights; and (g) giving the less supple sidewall a radius of curvature (in radial section) greater than that of the other sidewall. Alternatively, the carcass plies in the less supple sidewall may be calendered in a harder mixture than these in the other sidewall. The rubber of sidewall (14) may be white. |
