PURPOSE:To improve the visual angle characteristic of the liquid crystal display element. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal display element consists of a liquid crystal cell 5 consisting of two pieces of substrates having an electrode and a liquid crystal which is inserted and held between them and is in a twisted orientation in a state that a drive voltage is not applied to the above electrode, an optical anisotropic element 2 consisting of at least one layer of optical anisotropic substance layer which is placed so as to be opposed to this liquid crystal cell and in which an optical axis is a continuously twisted array, and two pieces of polarizing plates 1, 4 positioned so as to insert and hold the liquid crystal cell and the optical, anisotropic element. Also, this liquid crystal display element is set so that a twist axis of the optical anisotropic substance layer is roughly parallel to the normal direction of the surface of the substrate, and an absolute value of the sum of retardation values of at least one piece of optical anisotropic element is roughly equal to an absolute value of an effective retardation value of the liquid crystal cell at the time when a drive voltage is applied to the electrode. |
