The variations in operating conditions occurring in a biological filter tower for exhaust air purification are compensated for by addition of water which is loaded with material degradable in the biological tower (1). The constant operating conditions permit a continuous fault-free long-term operation, in which the operating conditions can also be adjusted according to long-term variations in the composition of the exhaust air. An accumulation of dissolved materials, in particular of salts, can be prevented by prompt emptying of the settling tank (5) with partial exchange of the process water.

|
