PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high-purity 2-alkylimidazole having excellent handleability. SOLUTION: The method for producing the 2-alkylimidazole from ammonia, a 3-20C alkylaldehyde and glyoxal is provided. The method for producing the 2-alkylimidazole is carried out as follows. In the method, the ammonia is reacted with the alkylaldehyde in a nonuniform state in an aqueous medium to produce an imine compound. The glyoxal is then added into the aqueous medium in which the imine compound is produced to react the imine compound with the glyoxal.
