[Also in Division F2] A passenger conveyer having an endless load-supporting member 24 is provided with a service brake 34 and an emergency brake which prevents movement of the member 24 when a drive chain 26 parts. The emergency brake comprises a brake shoe 56 engageable with a disc 41 which is secured to an assembly comprising a main drive wheel 25, sprockets 36, 39 and a torque tube 38, which assembly is freely rotatable about a shaft 37. The shoe 56 is slidingly guided along the web of a substantially horizontal channel member 58 and is engaged by a compression spring 68 controlled by a latch mechanism 52. To this mechanism is attached a cable 48 provided with a collar 53 and attached at its other end to a tension spring 49. The drive chain 26 normally supports a weight 44 pivotally supported on a bracket 46 by links 45. Upon parting of the chain 26, the weight 44 drops, one of the links 45 engages the cable collar 53, and the latch 52 is released whereupon the brake shoe 56 is urged to the left and is wedged between the channel member 58 and the disc 41. The member 58 is inherently resilient and is adjustable about its pivoted right end. When the latch 52 is released, an actuator 74 of a switch is engaged so that indication or control operations can be initiated. |
