The lighting system is suitable for a bicycle or similar means of transport, which comprises an electric circuit with a front reflector, a current source derived from the mechanical energy applied to the bicycle. The light intensity if automatically regulated irrespective of whether the bicycle is travelling at a high or low speed or whether it is at a standstill. The electric circuit is supplied by a rechargeable battery (4), which stores all excessive electrical energy when the bicycle is travelling at high speed. This energy is released again when travelling at a low speed or when stationary. The front and back and sidelights are each fitted with a battery. There is a switch (12) in the battery circuit by which it can be connected and disconnected.
