Azo dyes (I) are prepd. in aq. media by diazotising aromatic prim. amines at 20-50 degrees C and coupling at 20-90 degrees C and pH 0-13 with an arylaliphatic, benzenoid, naphthalenic or heterocyclic cpd. (I) can be used as acid, disperse, mordant, etc. dyes, or pigments. Diazotisation and coupling can be effected at relatively high temps. in conc. milieu in very short reaction times (seconds to minutes) and increased yields are obtd. Ice is no longer required generally or only very slightly. The vols. of water required for a given weight of (I) are much less than normal.
