PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display device is provided to eliminate a need to use a transparent electrode thereby enabling massive production at a low cost and allowing the liquid crystal display to have high contrast, and to have a big margin for the alignment of liquid crystal thereby providing a bright picture. CONSTITUTION: A pair of substrates are provided. A liquid crystal layer is held between the substrates. One of the substrates is provided with an electrode structure formed in order to generate an electric field(7) having a parallel component dominantly for the one substrate. The other of the substrates is provided with a non-conductive layer coming into contact with the liquid crystal layer and a color filter(17) arranged over the non-conductive layer. The face coming into contact with the color filter(17) of the non-conductive layer flattens this color filter(17) flat, and the face coming into contact with the liquid crystal layer controls the alignment of liquid crystal of this liquid crystal layer.
