PURPOSE:To obtain a gamma-pyridone derivative useful as a medicine, agricultural chemical or intermediate therefor in good yield in simple operation, by reacting a specific compound with a specific amine compound in the presence of a base and using a readily available raw material. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by formula I [R<1> is alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, heterocyclic ring group, etc.; R<2> is H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl or heterocyclic ring group; R<3> and R<4> are H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, aralkyl, etc., or R<3> and R<4> together form a group expressed by formula II (m is 3 or 4)] is reacted with an amine compound expressed by formula III [R<5> is vinyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or a group expressed by formula IV (n is 1-4; R<6> is H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, etc.)] in a solvent in the presence of a catalytic amount of an inorganic or organic base, particularly preferably at -10-+40 deg.C to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula V.
