An air-compressing (compression-ignition) internal combustion engine, particularly a diesel engine, primarily for motor vehicles, has a combustion-chamber recess arranged in the piston and an auxiliary chamber, likewise provided in the piston, which serves as a hot-air reservoir and has a passage-like connection with the combustion-chamber recess. As regards the arrangement and design of the combustion-chamber recess, the hot-air reservoir is arranged centrally in the combustion-chamber recess in the piston. In an internal combustion engine of this kind, optimum weight and space distribution and utilisation in the piston is guaranteed. At the same time, the abovementioned features result in the optimisation of the temperature and flow conditions in the combustion-chamber recess, in the auxiliary chamber and in the connection between the auxiliary chamber and the combustion-chamber recess.
