A stepped bed (10) has a support (12) for a mattress, which is subdivided into two support elements (14, 16). The mattress is similarly subdivided into two partial mattresses (18, 20) associated with the two support elements (14, 16). One support element (14) has a support surface for supporting the section of the subject's body extending from the buttocks to the head and the second support element (16) has a support surface for supporting the subject's legs. The height of the second support element (16) can be adjusted relative to the adjacent section of the first support element (14) to permit adaptation to the differences in thigh length between subjects.
