A transversely mounted in-line multi-cylinder engine drives an output shaft (34) supporting a torque converter (72) of an automatic transmission or the clutch of a manual transmission. The shaft (34) is disposed forward of the crankshaft (26) and above it, while the differential (80, 84) is placed rearward of the crankshaft under the inclined cylinder block (28) to provide a compact arrangement.
