PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound suitable for a raw material for producing N-vinylpyrrolidone useful for cosmetics, petroleum recovering agents, medicinal intermediate, etc., by reacting 2-pyrrolidone with an alcohol and acetaldehyde in the presence of phosphoric acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Acetaldehyde is added to a solution of 2-pyrrolidone and an alcohol (e.g. methanol) at 50 deg.C in the presence of a phosphoric acid catalyst while stirring, the reaction is carried out for four hours, the reaction solution is cooled, neutralized with ammonia water and precipitate is filtered off to give the objective N-(alpha-alkoxyethyl)pyrrolidone [e.g. N-(alpha-methoxyethyl) pyrrolidone]. Otherwise, in the presence of a phosphoric acid catalyst, 2- pyrrolidone is reacted with an alcohol and acetaldehyde, further the alcohol or acetaldehyde and the phosphoric acid catalyst are added and the reaction is continued. |
