In the radiation path of the lens system is a controllable, darkening device which is electro-mechanical. The darkening device comprises at least two darkening plates (31, 32) displaceable in relation to one another and at least partly covering each other. The edge areas of the darking plates facing each other are so formed that the extent of darkening is dependent upon their displacement. The plates in their central area have a recess (37, 38) which is so arranged that with complete displacement an opening remains, the width of which is greater than the height. The formation of the recesses is such that an opening is produced which is prismatic or ellipsoid. In the rear of the recesses on the side turned away from the gas discharge lamps, a grey filter is arranged with increasing transmission from the recess edge area to the centre.
