The invention relates to an illumination system (3) comprising an optical waveguide (11) of an optically transparent material having an exit surface and a plurality of end faces (13), and a light source (9) whose light is coupled into the waveguide (11) via at least one end face (13) of the waveguide (11). The waveguide (11) further comprises polarizing means for polarizing the light emitted by the light source. The waveguide (11) comprises at least two layers, of which one layer comprises an optically anisotropic material having refractive indices ne and no and the other layer comprises an optically isotropic material having a refractive index ni, in which one of the refractive indices ne or no is equal to ni. For the refractive indices, ne or no should be equal or substantially equal to ni in order that polarization separation occurs at the interface between the isotropic and the anisotropic material. The invention also relates to a flat-panel picture display device including such an illumination system.
