A method and an apparatus for treating waste water, capable of preventing carriers from being deposited below diffusers provided in a reaction vessel, or below diffusers provided in an aeration vessel, characterized in that the diffusers (3) are provided in an aeration vessel (l) in which waste water is biologically treated with carriers (2), which cultivate microorganisms, inserted thereinto, or in an aeration vessel sub-unit (la) joined to the aeration vessel (l) by a partition (4) including a screen capable of separating the carriers (2), bubble generators (5) or underwater agitators for generating a water current being provided in positions lower than the diffusers (3), the carriers (2) below the diffusers (3), being made to flow by a water current from the bubble generators (5) or underwater agitators, whereby the deposition of the carriers (2) below the diffusers (3) is prevented, this enabling the deposition of the carriers (2) below the diffusers (3) to be prevented, a treatment efficiency of the aeration vessel to be maintained, and a treatment capacity of a designed level to be obtained.
