PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust gas purifier which has a large crack limit, excellent strength against a thermal stress, a crack phenomenon, or the like, and a small pressure loss between filters, by adopting a porous silicon carbide honeycomb filter in an internal combustion engine using an addition agent- containing fuel. SOLUTION: When the pressure loss Pc of an alternately sealed cordierite honeycomb filter exceeds 1,750 mm Aq and becomes an equilibrium state, particulates begin burning to greatly decrease the pressure loss Pc. In the case of an alternately sealed silicon carbide honeycomb filter, as its pressure loss P1 becomes an equilibrium state near 1,250 mm Aq, the pressure loss P1 is decreased slightly even if the particulates begin burning, and the decrease rate is small as compared with that of a cordierite honeycomb filter having the same cell structure. By comparing the loss P1 of a cell structure at Cs=17/100, the loss P2 at Cs=14/100, and the loss P3 at Cs=12/100 with each other, it shows that a larger number of cells and a thinner thickness of a cell wall (dc) can make a change in the pressure loss smaller. |
