Waste oil removal from hard surfaces or water comprises use of chopped leather fibres transported in compacted form

Non-captured effluent oil is soaked up by leather fibers, derived from waste off-cuts. Bulk fiber is sub-divided into small batches, each of which is compressed to a geometric-shaped body. The compressed geometric bodies are transported to the location at which oil is to be removed and the leather fibers are released by a roughening process and are distributed over the oily surface. The fibres are collected and placed in a press where the oil is expelled. Non-captured effluent oil is soaked up by leather fibers derived from waste off-cuts which are reduced to fiber and cut into lengths of 1-5 mm. The bulk fibre is sub-divided into small batches, each of which is compressed by a force of ca. 1-5 N/mm<2> to a geometric-shaped body of density 980 kg/m<3>. The compressed geometric bodies are transported to the location at which oil is to be removed. The leather fibers in the geometric bodies are released by a roughening process and are distributed over the oily surface, where they soak up the oil. The fibers are then lifted and collected and placed in a press where the oil is expelled. Preferred Process: The de-oiled fibers may be re-used for a repeat of the same action. The leather fibers may be pre-impregnated with microorganisms which break down oil.
