PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To thin and make compact a spin valve magnetoresistive element. SOLUTION: A multilayer fixed magnetic layer formed of a first and a second fixed magnetic layers via an antiferromagnetic coupling intermediate later is adopted as a fixed magnetic layer 4. An alloy which shows no magnetism when formed in a film, and is regulated and shows magnetism when a magnetic field is applied under a predetermined condition after formed in a film is adopted as an antiferromagnetic layer 5. The first fixed magnetic layer 4c is made thinner than the second fixed magnetic layer 4a.
