PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color matching method by which a desired image can be reproduced through proper gamut compression. SOLUTION: A point P at the outside a gamut Gout of an output device is compression-converted to a point P' in the gamut Gout of the output device (surface). The point P' is placed on a lightness plane V equal to that of the point P. The point P' is a point at which a color differenceΔE from the point P is minimized on the equi-lightness plane V. Since the point P is converted into the point P' with the minimized color difference while keeping the lightness, no inversion of the lightness between received data after the gamut compression is caused. Since the color change is minimized, a desired image can be reproduced.
