PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain translucent holes having a uniform hole diameter, regardless of directions where shadow masks are cut out from a metal thin sheet rolled in the prescribed direction. SOLUTION: The translucent holes 8 are formed into a prescribed pattern in a specified area of the metal thin sheet 1 for forming the shadow mask 10. The translucent holes 8 are formed, by etching on the metal thin sheet 1 from the front and the back side. Two patterns for forming the translucent holes 8 are prepared through obtaining a crosswise pattern where a longer direction of the shadow mask 10 is matched with a rolling direction F, and obtaining lengthwise a pattern where a shorter direction of the shadow mask 10 is matched with the perpendicular direction to the rolling direction F. In the crosswise obtaining pattern, the diameter in a translucent hole forming pattern for small holes positioned in an end part in the shorter direction is set 2μm or larger than the diameter in a translucent hole forming pattern for small holes positioned in an end part in the longer direction in a lengthwise obtaining pattern. Thereby, the hole diameter of the translucent holes 8 formed by etching can be made constant.
