PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for making contaminated soil harmless by dehalogenating vapor-phase harmful organic halogen compounds in the soil. SOLUTION: In the method for making contaminated soil harmless, an iron powder-base permeable body such as a cylindrical sponge iron cake is packed into each hole pierced in the contaminated soil from the ground to a position above a water table and gas in the soil is passed through the permeable body to dehalogenate organic halogen compounds contained in the gas.
