PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an efficient scanning operation without interrupting a work by preventing reading of an abnormal image such as an image missing. SOLUTION: An spacing of originals is detected by two sensors so that the spacing does not become narrower than a predetermined spacing of the originals, and drive of a paper feed roller is disengaged using a clutch. This image reader is constituted so as to judge whether the spacing is the spacing of the originals or a punch hole opened in the hole by monitoring the originals by the two sensors after disengaging the clutch.
