PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hologram recording material and a recording medium that achieve high refractive index change, flexibility, high sensitivity, low scattering, environmental resistance, durability, small dimensional changes small (low shrinkage) and high multiplicity. SOLUTION: The hologram recording material comprises a metal oxide matrix and a photopolymerizable compound, and the metal oxide matrix is formed of a matrix forming material, containing at least a cyclic ether group-containing metal alkoxide compound (I) expressed by (R<SB>E</SB>)mM<SB>I</SB>(OR<SB>11</SB>)n or its polymers, wherein the formula, R<SB>E</SB>represents a cyclic ether group-containing organic group, R<SB>11</SB>represents an alkyl group and M<SB>I</SB>represents metal; and a metal alkoxide compound (II) that does not contain cyclic ether group expressed by (R<SB>22</SB>)jM<SB>II</SB>(OR<SB>21</SB>)k or its polymers, wherein R<SB>22</SB>represents an alkyl group or an aryl group, R<SB>21</SB>represents an alkyl group and M<SB>II</SB>represents a metal.
