PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a optical wireless communication system that can reduce the power consumption of a reception circuit provided to a receiver side. SOLUTION: The optical wireless communication system makes optical communication between a gas meter 2 and a handy terminal 1. The handy terminal 1 is provided with a start signal transmission means that transmits a start signal to instruct communication start to the gas meter 2 and with a data transmission means that transmits data in succession to the transmission of the start signal by the start signal transmission means. The gas meter 2 is provided with a CPU 20 that is brought into a communication enabled state by supplying power to a demodulation circuit 23 included in the gas meter in response to the start signal from the start signal transmission means and with a data reception means that uses the demodulation circuit brought into the communication enabled state by the CPU to receive data transmitted from the data transmission means of the handy terminal 1.
