Expandable polystyrene beads are prepared by (1) carrying out a polymerisation reaction on a system containing 100 parts styrene, 70-400 parts water and a catalyst, using a stirring speed sufficient to form a suspension of the monomer and polymer, (2) stirring until 30-70 parts of the monomer have polymerised and the dispersed phase has a viscosity coefficient not exceeding 70 poises at 40 deg.C, (3) adding a stabiliser to the suspension to maintain the suspension until at least 99 parts of monomer have polymerised, and (4) adding a foaming agent. |
