The welding head is mounted on a powered carriage running on a rail which has convex support surfaces situated on opposite sides of the rail, The ends of the rail in one design are held by on a pair of vertically adjustable uprights. The carriage has a U-shaped carrier with upper and lower flanges joined by a wall. The welding head can be connected to the side of the carriage on an outrigger. Normally the carriage carries an electrical arc welding control unit and a main switch board for control switches. Rail may be adjusted at angle to vertical to enable welding head to be slanted with respect to workpiece.
