The tailstock serves as a centring and clamping device for a workpiece or as a clamping device for a drilling tool. To displace the tailstock centre (25) transversely to the workpiece axis, the tailstock top part (10), which consists of two parts (18, 19) movable towards one another, is adjusted by a piezoelectric drive (23, 26, 27) by which at least one of the two parts movable towards one another is deflected. An adjusting means for the tailstock centre is thereby obtained which is exceptionally precise and to the greatest possible extent is insusceptible to trouble. <IMAGE>
