An alcohol fuel includes an ignition improving additive and a lubricating additive, the lubricating additive comprising a polyunsaturated fatty acid or fatty acid monoester which is fully soluble in the alcohol fuel. Additives having up to thirty carbon atoms in their molecular chain are suitable provided they remain soluble in the alcohol fuel. Polar groups in the molecular structure, such as hydroxyl or carbonyl group promote solubility in alcohol through the hydrogen bonding mechanism. Suitable additives include linoleic acid and the corresponding linoleate monoesters having two sites of unsaturation, and linolenic acid and the corresponding linolenate monoesters having three sites of unsaturation. The additive is present up to 1% or 3% by weight. |
