The chuck (10) may be used on a rotary machine, eg. a lathe. It uses a collet (1) with conical gripping surfaces and a slit (5) which enables expansion and contraction. There is a bolt (27) which engages in the slit to move the collet axially and the bore (7) of the collet is in contact with a nut (17). This runs on a screw (21) with an enlarged knurled end (35) turning on a central shaft (13), and it bears against the end (9) of the collet.
