The modem comprises a sound card (103), with a modulation-demodulation program (114) placed in the program memory (110) and a control program (115) for the sampling, conversion and modem operation by the modem program. The modem program has a sub-program controlling the sampling frequency of the sound card, with a correction in the case of difference in value or phase. This is connected to the telephone line (1) by the audio ports (Lin, Lout) of the sound card (103), and a line interface (200) which has an impedance adaptor and a device to automatically detect the unhooking, hooking and ringing of the line. It may include a switch to a telephone handset for verbal communication.
