FIELD: machining of metals. SUBSTANCE: method consists in action of impact load on metal specimen and determination of identical radius r on metal specimen, cutting of it at speed V and measurements of chip thickness Q, determination of length C<SB>1</SB> of its plastic contact with cutting tool front surface, determination of chip contact overall length C<SB>c</SB>, comparison of C<SB>c</SB> with experimentally obtained value of chip contact overall length C<SB>e</SB>. Besides, the value of allowable error of one parameter, characterizing the specimen condition, is determined, with due account of which chip contact overall length C<SB>c</SB> is determined and this parameter is corrected before determination of chip contact overall length C<SB>c</SB> for different cutting parameters. Prior to action of impact load, metal specimen is subjected to action of tensile load, and stress sigma in specimen, modulus of elasticity E and deformation delay time T in specimen are determined from relation <EMI ID=0.306 HE=3 WI=18 TI=CHI>, where epsi - deformation rate. This time is selected as a correctable parameter. Length C<SB>1</SB> of chip plastic contact with cutting tool front surface is determined from relations involving the above parameters, as well as gamma - front top rake angle of non-cutting tool.
