PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a good fuel or lubricant compsn. by incorporating a carboxylic acid reaction product obtd. by reacting a substd. carboxylic acid acylating agent with a carboxylic acid deriv. into the same. SOLUTION: This compsn. contains a carboxylic acid reaction product which is formed by reacting 1 equivalent of a polyolefin-substd. carboxylic acid acylating agent of formula I with 0.5-3.0 mol of a carboxylic acid deriv. of formula II or III (e.g. glyoxylic ester hemiacetal), then with anα,δ-unsatd. carboxylic acid, and with a compd. selected from among ammonia, hydrazine, monoamines, and polyamines. The substd. carboxylic acid acylating agent is obtd. by the chlorine-catalyzed reaction of a polyolefin (e.g. polybutene, etc.) having a wt. average mol.wt. of 200-5,000 with anα,δ-unsatd. carboxylic anhydride (e.g. maleic anhydride, etc.). In formulas I to III, R is a hydrocarbylated olefin group; R<3> , R<5> , and R<9> are each H or hydrocarbyl; R<4> is a divalent hydrocarbylene; and n is 0 or 1.
