摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject polymer in high yield without needing a large quantity of auxiliary stock, e.g. radical polymerization initiator, chain transfer agent or solvent by heating a specific propionic acid derivative in a specific temperature range at a specific content of dissolved oxygen. SOLUTION: This polymer having a molecular weight of preferably 20,000 or less is obtained by heating a propionic acid derivative shown by formula I [R1 is H or the like; X is shown by formula II (R2 is a 1-4C alkyl or the like), formula III (R3 is a 1-8C alkyl or the like) or formula IV (R4 and R5 are each phenyl or the like); and Y is an alkoxy or the like shown by formula V], e.g.β-substituted propionic acid ester, at 100 to 250 deg.C in the presence of 2 ppm or less of dissolved oxygen.
