PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new discotic compound having a wide temperature range for forming a discotic nematic phase, and capable of manifesting good crystallinity at the room temperature. SOLUTION: This new discotic compound is the one or formula I [D is a basic nuclear part of a molecule; X is a halogen, a 1-12C alkyl or the like; L1 is a divalent connecting group; Biph is a biphenyl structure; L2 is a divalent connecting group; Z is a reactive group; (k) is 0 or 1; (p) is 0 or 1; (m) is an integer of 0-100; (n) is an integer of 0-100, with the proviso that the total of (m) and (n) does not exceed 100], e.g. 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexa[4'- (11-acryloyloxy) undecyloxy}biphenyl-4-carbonyloxy]triphenylene. The discotic compound is obtained by condensing a compound represented by D with a compound of formula III. An optically anisotropic layer is formed by polymerizing the compound to provide the objective optical compensation sheet. |
