A sphygmomanometer (10; 110) having cuff means (11) comprising an inflatable cuff (12) having a length susceptible to inflation, and constriction means (30; 130) to constrict the cuff (12) at different positions along it thereby to vary the said length continuously from a maximum to an effective length less than the maximum and such as to select or pre-set any desired effective length for the cuff in the range of about 20 % to 100 % of the maximum length. The cuff means includes fastening means (13, 15; 115, 150) comprising first and second mutually interengageable parts (13, 15; 115, 150) spaced apart longitudinally of the cuff (12) when the latter is inflated, one of said parts (13, 15; 115, 150) being attached to the cuff by means permitting the fastened cuff, in use, to adopt a frusto-conical form such that it can accomodate the taper of a subject's limb, e.g. the upper arm of a human patient, whose blood pressure is being taken. Said fastening means (13, 15; 115, 150) and said cuff (12) may be pivotally inter-connected to permit the cuff to adopt a frusto-conical form of variable cone angle and thus accomodate, automatically, varying degrees of taper. A one-hand operable, releasable ratchet mechanism (140, 133) may be provided to restrain withdrawal of the cuff from a housing therefor, the mechanism including release means (144, 145t) operable to permit such withdrawal. The releasable ratchet mechanism (140, 133) comprises a rotatable input member in the form of a knob unit (140) and, coaxial therewith, a rotatable output member in the form of a spindle (133), rotation of the input member (140) in a first direction effecting rotation of the output member (133) in that direction but preventing rotation of the output member (133) in a second, opposite direction, and rotation of the input member (140) in the opposite second direction permitting rotation of the output member (133) in that second direction.
