PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a supervisory camera system that makes long time video recording compatible with video recording of information amount priority at abnormality while keeping the image quality of a monitor image. SOLUTION: The digital supervisory camera system is provided with cameras that apply MPEG compression to photographed video signals and provide an output of the result as digital video data, a transmission means that transmits the digital video data outputted from the cameras, a display means that displays the digital video data, a detection means that detects the presence of a fault, a variable compression means that can revise a picture configuration of the digital video data depending on the result of detection by the detection means, and a recoding means that records the video data outputted from the variable compression means to a recording medium.
