PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a gradation display of high luminance by using a PDP in the structure wherein two adjacent lines share a display electrode. SOLUTION: To reproduce gradations of fields F1 and F2 by setting whether cells need to illuminate by subfields, the fields F1 and F2 are composed of subfields SF1 to SFq-1, for which one of two adjacent lines is used for the display and a subfield SFq, for which the two adjacent lines are used for the display and brought under the same illumination control. The luminance of the subfields when the two lines are used for the display becomes twice as high as when only one line is used.
