A slat or rail used in a covering for an architectural opening includes a wooden core or the like that is wrapped with a flexible film of foil, paper or the like with the film bonded to the core with a Polyurethane Reactive (PUR) hot melt adhesive that provides a moisture free barrier around the core. The core may be provided with grooves in which edges of the film can be inserted to facilitate an aestheti c attachment of the film to the core. The core may also be made from a single strip of wood, various interconnected species of wood which may be finger jointed together or even two or more strips of wood that are abutted and adhesively bonded together i n side- by-side relationship.
