In the coating of paper strip by applying a coating to one side thereof whilst applying, either simultaneously with or immediately before the coating, a moistening agent to the other side to prevent distortion of the strip, the strip 1 is fed over a roller 3 and moistening liquid is applied thereto in the form of a fine spray or mist from nozzles 8 and 12 in such a way that at least part of the mist passes into the entry gap 6 between the roller and the strip, the strip being coated on the reverse side at 2.
