NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R<1> is 4-20C straight- chain alkyl; R<2> is 7-20C straight-chain alkyl). EXAMPLE:5-Heptyloxy-2-(4-butylphenyl)pyrimidine. USE:A ferroelectric liquid crystal material. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula II is reacted with a methoxymalonic acid diester in the presence of a sodium alcoholate to afford a compound expressed by formula III, which is then reacted reacted with a halogenating agent to substitute OH by halogen and the resultant halogen substit uent compound is dehalogenated in the presence of a base, heat treated in the presence of an alkali in diethylene glycol to convert OCH3 to OH and ether ized to provide the compound expressed by formula I.
