PURPOSE:To obtain a Raman laser having a large gain in an infrared range without using a multipass cell by a method wherein a flexible fine tube-shape optical waveguide is employed to produce a Raman scattering efficiently. CONSTITUTION:An infrared laser beam having an energy about 2-7J/pulse and emitted from a CO2 laser, a YAG laser, etc., is condensed by an incident lens 109 and introduced into an optical waveguide 100 in which Raman medium is enclosed while it is converged so as to have a beam diameter which is 40-60% of the diameter of the optical waveguide 100. By introducing the laser beam into the fine optical waveguide 100 while it is converged into the fine beam, an electric field intensity is increased and, while the beam is propagated through the optical waveguide 100 in which the Raman medium is enclosed, a Raman scattering is induced and wavelength conversion is performed. Then the beam is emitted from the optical waveguide 100 through an emitting lens 111 so as not to spread the beam. with this constitution, a Raman laser having a large gain in an infrared range can be obtained without using a multipass cell. |
