PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming device and an image forming method in which many sensors are not used and by which cost rise is prevented. SOLUTION: This image forming device is equipped with a housing means where one or plural pieces of recording material are placed or housed, an image forming means for forming an image on the recording material and a carrying system constituting a 1st carrying path through which the recording material is carried from the housing means to the image forming means and a 2nd carrying path through which the recording material is carried to the image forming means in a reversed state after forming an image on either surface of the recording material in the case of forming the image on both surfaces of the recording material. The device is provided with a detection means for detecting the biasing and the contracting degree of the recording material carried from the 2nd carrying path to the recording material before reversal by detecting whether or not the recording material carried from the 1st carrying path is the recording material on either surface of which the image has been already recorded in an area where the 1st and the 2nd carrying paths are joined.
